Boxes

250 box challenge Y generator

A random Y — the three edges meeting at a box's nearest corner — to start your next box from. Draw it out into a full box, then check how tightly it converges.

Seed — it's in this page's address, so you can send this exact Y to someone or come back to it.

What the Y is for

Every box has one corner nearest the viewer, and three edges leave it in the three directions the whole box will follow. Commit to those three directions first and the rest of the box has something to obey; start anywhere else and you are negotiating with a shape that has already made up its mind.

That is why the Y is the usual way into a box in the 250 box challenge. Drawing two hundred and fifty of them from Ys you invented yourself has a habit of producing two hundred and fifty of the same box — the same comfortable angle, the same gentle foreshortening. A generated Y takes the choice away, which is the point.

How to use it

Draw this one in the checker opens the app on the same Y, refitted to your screen — same corner, same three directions.
